Alpine Currant (Ribes alpinum) is a dense, rounded shrub native to central and northern Europe. It is commonly grown for hedges and foundation plantings.

Bright green lobed leaves turn yellow in fall. Small yellow green spring flowers may be followed by red berries, although the shrub is grown mainly for its foliage and compact habit. It tolerates sun or partial shade, urban conditions, and soils ranging from sand to clay.

How to stratify seed

In the fridge. Put the seed in a bag with a damp medium such as peat moss, vermiculite, sand or coco coir. The medium is only there to hold moisture. Keep the bag in the fridge, above freezing, for the cold period shown, then sow.

Or outside. Sow the seed outdoors in the fall and let winter do the cold period.
